Where this comes from. Line Change is a hockey take on 82-0, the game where you draft an all-time NBA roster and chase an undefeated season. Go play that one too. Want a longer game? Try Time on Ice, the salary-cap league. Prefer baseball? Play Rally Cap.

How the record is figured. Each spot is weighted before averaging — goalie 1.30, centre 1.10, everyone else 0.95 — because a hot goalie drags more games across the line than a third defenceman. Chemistry adds up to +2.5 when two of your picks shared a club within five seasons of each other. The team rating maps to a points percentage, then to wins, losses and overtime losses. On Legend, the team rating takes a 2.5-point tax before it becomes a record. Ceiling is roughly 75 wins: nobody goes 82-0.

Ratings are hand-set for this game, not official NHL numbers. Stat lines are real regular-season totals from the NHL. Cards carry each club's real colours and the player's actual sweater number, keyed to the club he wore it for — Coffey is 7 in Edmonton and 77 in Detroit, Bourque 7 before 1987 and 77 after. Wing and defence sides are assigned to make the lineup card work; a few players moved around in real life.
